Reading Acts

He was in the city; he
was traveling the road to Damascus.

He doesn't explain everything,
how he came to understand Truth,
why he stopped martyring the Way:
"suddenly a light from heaven
flashed [or shone] around him."
Just that. The conversion
occurred like magic.

Saul, Saul,
like Absalom! Absalom!
The first blinded with something like scales,
the latter hanging from a tree
with three spears thrust into his middle—
these are divine means to stop rebellion.

A man named Ananias placed his hands on Saul

so he could see again. Then he
was lowered in a basket,
observed: in a shipwreck,
on an island, singing in a jail cell
during an earthquake.

Always in letters, he understood G-d
but left so much to interpretation.

To put it this way: G-d is ______
(loving, vengeful, jealous,
everywhere,
strength, guilt, a Spirit,
triumviral,
light beyond darkness,
indefinite good).
