An Asian baby laughing behind the counter of a restaurant. The syrupy wheeze of a dog. Two girls, women, bicker about credit cards. My car's engine heave. Stories about predestination. How to catch a frog. The flicker of ceiling lamps as the AC begins. Sirens. Some birds, probably grackles, and a raccoon. Old floorboards in the darkness. A woman scream from the backyard. That click as I shut the door.
